Live a happy life. Is that even possible in the midst of all your problems? A broken heart perhaps? Months or years of fruitless job search?

A business that is refusing to take off or that has collapsed. Perhaps you’re in debt? Or wondering how you’re going to pay your child school fees? Or you even feel like a failure at life. Nothing is working.

And if it seems that things couldn’t get worse it actually has the world is currently in the midst of a global lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. 

How to be happy in the midst of all this looks like an impossible challenge. 

But it is not and it shouldn’t be. No challenge, problem or issue should keep you in a constant state of unhappiness.

As a young person journeying into full-time adulthood, especially in a country like Nigeria which as we all know has its unique set of challenges, your moments of happiness, will be disrupted more often now by moments of unhappiness. 

And that’s just life happening there’s just no escaping it. Even animals have problems: hunt successfully or starve to death. Or fail to run away successfully and become another animals dinner.

And just like that, you have stumbled upon the first true key to how to live a happy life: Choice. 

You have to either choose to be happy with whatever challenges you are facing or not to be happy still with whatever challenges you are facing.

 Obviously the first option is a whole lot better than the second there are also massive benefits to being happy.

And I believe your presence here is because you’re looking for the first option: a successful life of happiness in spite of challenges here and there.

Are there really things you can do to make sure that you are by and large happy most of your life? Thankfully Yes! There are. Here are 21 things you should do to live a happy life.

As I said before this is probably one of the most important things you can do to ensure that you are happy for the better part of your life. Choose to be happy regardless of your circumstances.

Choose to be content.

You will never be truly satisfied with everything you have. Again that’s just the nature of being human.

 Think about it: that new dress will become an old one, that new phone will become an old phone. 

Today you have seen the most beautiful girl in the world tomorrow you will see another most beautiful girl in the world and the list goes on. Want to be happy? Simply learning how to be content.

Work hard towards the things you want that will enhance your happiness.

Hey, but hang on. Didn’t you just say that you should learn how to be content? Yes, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t work hard to have the good things in life or solve your problems. 

Solving your problems will make you happier. It will be nice to earn enough money to pay your child school fees, wouldn’t it? Or not to worry about how to feed every day.

 You will also be happier if you have enough to take your family on a vacation, wouldn’t you? So yes working hard towards the things you want and need will help you become a happier person.

Be grateful

Right now maybe, for example, you are complaining a lot about how much you would like a new job since your current job does not meet your needs.  But meanwhile somewhere out there somebody is praying hard to get that next to nothing job that you are complaining about.

Being grateful from time to time for all the good things that you have going for you will make you a happier person in the long run.

Make others happy.

When last have you helped anyone with anything? Put a smile on someone else’s face? Focused on another person’s problem rather than your own?

Helping people makes you feel happy. If you don’t believe it try it out and see. 

Tip: you’ll be happier when you do it especially when you don’t feel like doing it. Make it a habit.

Smile, laugh and play

Smiling, laughing and playing makes you feel good. Makes you feel happy. And these emotions are totally free to use! 

Performing these actions regularly translate to you having that nice feel-good feeling inside. so do things regularly that make you smile, laugh and play. Like watching a comedy or better still do the next one

This is also one of the best keys to happiness. Having the right kind of people who will be there to share the good and the bad times with you. The right companions and or friends will make sure your life is a happier one most of the time.

Play upbeat music.

Music is a very powerful emotional stimulus. It has quite a bit of power to make you feel happy or sad or any other emotion depending on what you play.

 If you want to feel happy play happy music, motivational music or dance music! Regularly.

Affirm happiness in your life

Try daily happy affirmations. This quote from the book Winnie the Pooh is worth its weight in gold:

That is an amazing way to start the first day of the rest of your happy life. There are many such quotes out there and you can even create some for yourself and say them each time you get up from bed or you are feeling down.

Stop trying to be perfect

One of the great hindrances to living a happy life is the quest to be perfect, another impossibility for a human. When you fall or fail or look at the things you don’t like about yourself the temptation is to stress and be unhappy about it.

Imperfection is part of being a human. And it’s a part of every human. So just learn how to live with it and you will be happier.

Don’t compare your life to others

This is one of the easiest ways to be miserable for the rest of your life. The kind of problems and unhappiness comparison brings are plenty.

 Low self-esteem, jealousy, frustration etc in this world there will always be people with better lives than yours and there are also people who have lives that are not as good as yours. So why give yourself a headache and heartache over it? 

And besides a lot of people who you think are having it so good are also having problems too. 

Problems that if they probably shared with you you be thrilled and thankful for the current state of your life.

So stop comparing yourself to others it is a totally unnecessary burden to put on yourself.

Acceptance of things and situations you can do nothing about

The easiest example to come up with here is death. When you lose a loved one, for example, there is nothing you can do about it. 

You can choose to live on or choose to be unhappy for the rest of your days about it. 

Someone who has passed on would most likely pray that those they leave behind continue to live happy lives in their absence.

 And why spend the rest of your life sad or in pain about something you cannot change? How is that a good thing? The answer is that it is not. Choose to be happy.

Chances are that you’re never happy when you’re sick. A lot of diseases can be kept at bay by simply living a healthy lifestyle.

So help yourself by staying healthy. Eat properly and do exercises to stay fit. Doing exercise does leave you feeling happy afterwards by the way. Also, exercise doesn’t have to be stressful or boring. You could dance or play football or swim etc 


That’s right letting things go when people offend you leaves you a happier person. Let’s think about it for a bit are you happy when you’re angry? Are you happy when you’re sad? Are you happy when you are hurting? Enough said here.

Have a positive disposition to everything

Form the habit of focusing on the glass being half full rather than half empty

Switch to positive thoughts when you have negative ones.

Immediately shifts to a solution mindset when you encounter problems or challenges.

Look forward to the light at the end of every tunnel.

In short, learn to find a silver lining in everything.

Do what makes you happy and all those things you’ve always wanted to do.

At times life happenings take over everything and you stop doing certain things that you used to enjoy or you fail to do those things you’ve always wanted to do.

Make yourself happy by doing all those things you used to enjoy doing and finally trying those things you have always wanted to try.

Any it’s totally okay to like something that everyone else hates. You are unique. We all are.

Find answers to questions like what are my talents and gifts?

And how best can I use them for myself, family and for the world?

The minute you know the reason why you are here on earth and you start living that reason you will be happier.

Be happy with who you are.

Self-acceptance is key to happiness. There is no way you can be happy if you dislike yourself. You are unique. There is no one like you anywhere else. You are not perfect but no one else is. Love yourself.
